Abstract
Solitary plasmacytoma of bone. a variant form of plasma cell disorders, is relatively
rare. Futhermore, the relationship between solitary plasmacytoma and multiple myeloma
remains unclear. The diagnostic criterias for solitary plasmacytoma of boneareas follows
:1. A radiologically solitary bone lesion,2. A biopsy showing plasma cell histology, 3. An
absence of myeloma cells in bone marrow examination, 4. An absence of anemia,
hypercalcemia or renal involvement, 5. Conversely, the detection of a monoclonal
component in the serum and or urine did not exclude the diagnosis of solitary
plasmacytoma of bone.
The authors experienced a case of solitary plasmacytoma of the left 9th rib. A
67-year-old male patient complained painful mass on the posterior aspect of left 9th rib.
The radiologic findings showed single irregular osteolytic expansive lesion on the left
9th rib. The needle biopsies from the left 9th rib showed massive proliferation of
immature and mature plasma cells. Bone marrow aspiration and Biopsies resealed
normal. Serum protein electrophoresis showed no monoclonal peak or paraprotein and
Bence-Jones protein was negative.
The patient was given the doses of 6000 rads of local irradiation for 7 weeks without
complication. So we report a case of solitary plasmacytoma of bone with brief review of
literature.
